Rhubarb Varieties

Rhubarb is a popular source for pies and sauces. Fertile, well-drained soils in the Midwest are well suited for this flavorful red garden crop. Planting should be done in the early spring. Set rows 5 to 6 feet apart, and in the rows, plant 3 feet apart in shallow furrows so crowns will be only 2 inches below the surface. Harvest no more than 4 weeks beginning the third season of growth. Harvest for about 8 to 10 weeks in the fourth season of growth. DO NOT remove more than 1/2 of the developed stalks from any plant at one time. This will give the roots strength for the next season.

Canada Red--Sweet juicy stalks that are cherry-red clear through. It keeps its color when cooked. Stalks are high in sugar and tender with no need to peel. Plants are hardy and suitable for northern zones. When red color is the desire choose the reddest...Canada Red.

Crimson Red--This varieity is considered by some to be the best flavored rhubarb available with a perfect sweet, tart combination that makes rhubarb so appealing. RHUBARB DIVISIONS....
The rhubarb divisions you buy from Indiana Berry and Plant Co. are cut from a large crown. You will need to plant these divisions properly. Establishing a rhubarb planting can be tricky. However, once the plants become established they are very hardy. The buds are located at the top of the division. The divisions should be planted with these buds just barely poking out of the ground and with the cut sides of the division in the ground with soil pressed firmly around the division. Be sure not to let new plantings become too dry, but do not over water or allow plant to sit in standing water or the divisions can rot. Once your planting is established it will produce for many, many years.
